Keep your favourite perennials healthy and vigorous year after year by dividing them. Learn how to get started with our step-by-step guide.
If you notice individual plants not performing well, or your garden beds are beginning to be cramped, it’s time to grab your tools and divide perennials. It’s also an opportunity to move plants around in your space and share with neighbors and loved ones.
Here’s our guide about dividing perennials.
Autumn is the ideal time to divide perennials that flower in the spring. If you are splitting a summer blooming plant, divide in early spring. Generally, plants should be divided every three to five years. Avoid dividing plants while they are still in bloom.
Dig up the entire plant, roots included. Lift the plant carefully from the hole and shake off excess soil. Remove any dead stems and foliage.
Separate the root system in half down the middle, using two garden forks or sharp knife.
Replant in a new hole with fresh soil and water well.
