Caring for Live Potted Christmas Trees

November 10, 2022

live potted Christmas trees

Live potted Christmas trees are a popular, environmentally friendly alternative to a freshly cut tree. Enjoy the fresh scent of live evergreens inside your home or in your outdoor décor with the added benefit of being able to plant it in your garden after the holidays to watch it grow and enjoy for years to come.

CARING FOR YOUR LIVE POTTED CHRISTMAS TREE OVER THE HOLIDAYS

To ensure your potted evergreen tree stays fresh all season, keep it well-watered and protected from harsh winds.

Keep decorations light and make sure if using lights, they give off the lowest heat possible.

When moving outside after the holidays, you will need to transition inside over 2-3 days in a sheltered area to avoid shock from the temperature change.

PLANTING YOUR LIVE POTTED CHRISTMAS TREE AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

If the ground has yet to freeze, you can plant your tree immediately after the holidays.

  • When you are ready to plant, place your tree in a bucket of water a day before planting to soften up the fibre pot for removal.
  • Choose a somewhat sheltered spot that gets lots of sun and will not be subject to harsh winds.
  • Place the root ball in a hole, backfill it with earth, water well, and cover it with mulch.
  • As soon as the ground thaws in spring, apply Parkwood® Transplanter.

PLANTING YOUR LIVE POTTED CHRISTMAS TREE IN THE SPRING

If you can’t plant right after Christmas or the ground has frozen, store the plant outside in a protected area, away from wind and sun.

  • Cover the pot with straw, mulch, or burlap. This will insulate the pot, preventing repetitive freeze and thaw cycles.
  • Make sure to plant in early spring and use Parkwood® Transplanter to establish strong roots.

Note: If you bring your potted evergreen inside and plan to plant it in your garden, do not keep it indoors for more than ten days and transition it back outdoors over 2-3 days in a cool sheltered area like a covered porch or garage.

Evergreens planted in the garden from the potted Christmas tree products are not covered under our ‘Never Stop Growing Guarantee’ warranty.
